The rain we have gotten lately has done little to replenish the system.  Water levels are near record lows, so be very careful traveling on the river.  Fishing has been OK but the quickly changing weather patterns have made it a bit of hit and miss.  Lake Poygan and Winneconne have still been good and the bluegill and northern pike fishing has been good.  A few walleye have been being caught in the river but if you have a canoe, I can let you in on some super fishing.  Send me an email for specifics.

Make sure to check out the new Outdoors page on Wolf River Country.Com.  Lots of new links and more to come.

First let me apologize for the delay in posting a new fishing report.  For those who wrote, there will also be some new updates to Wolf River Country.Com’s “Outdoor Pages” very soon,  I also hope you all like my new site, Doc’s Waters.  Look for lots more there soon too.

Fishing has been worth the trip most days, but there are few anglers out there. Walleye, bluegill and catfish action is average for this time of year and the northern pike fishing has been very good. “PLEASE RELEASE ALL BUT A TROPHY FISH”  Even then, consider a replica.  They last longer and are easier to take care of.   The Wolf River system has the potential to produce GIANT pike. (A 53″ fish was registered at Larry & Jan’s Resort a few years ago) , so help maintain a potential world class fishery by chasing bluegill, perch and walleye for the frying pan, not northern pike. Same with the smallmouth bass, PLEASE RELEASE THEM.  For a limited time, Mike Remme will offer a “Wolf River Country” $50 discount on a replica.  Contact me directly so I can send you the coupon.

Along with the chance to catch a few fish, this is a good time of year to check out shore structure that is sure to hold spring walleye.  I’ve found some of my best spring spots this time of year.   Some of my favorite rock piles and stair step shorelines are only visible during the yearly low water period.  Use a jig and leech to probe deeper water and outside bends with rocks, and you should have no problem finding a tug on the line.  Just be careful, water levels are very low.

Lake Poygan, Lake Winneconne and Winnebago have all been producing walleye.  This should continue until we get some real hot weather.

You may have noticed a change in Wolf River Country.Com.  That is because I have sold it to a magazine publisher, whose first edition is on the news stands throughout the area.  I will continue to supply some content and site help through the outdoor section and this blog.  I have also put up a new web site at http://www.docswaters.com where I will have all of my recent articles, pictures and stories from a variety of topics.   Please visit.

Hot fishing some days that is.  Especially after any stretch of stable weather.  Walleye have been being caught in the river by those looking, with some limit catches being reported.  Not many people fishing for them though, especially in New London where casting small crank baits to flooded shoreline cover should produce a variety of fish.  The mouth of the river at Lake Poygan and the shallow areas of the lake itself have also been producing walleye on some days, along with a few white bass, drum sheepeshead and the occasional northern pike.

Water levels are cooler then normal. but are also higher then normal for this time of year. That should be a clue as to the shallow water bite.

There have been some catches of walleye in the lower river and out on Lake Poygan.  White bass, catfish and drum (sheephead) will also provide a tug on the line.  Same goes for the river in New London.  There are a few walleye around and the catfish are starting to bite.  There is also some pretty good smallmouth bass fishing to be had and even a good population of largemouth bass.  The northern pike should also stat to bite as soon as the water warms up a bit.

I’ve heard of some incredible catches of white bass, but also of people catching just a few.  I’ve also talked to people that caught a lot on one day only to return to just a few fish.I’m not sure if it’s because of the start of the spawning process or the falling water level.  Either way, the people I have talked to told me the fish were still pre-spawn, which surprised me.

Walleye fishing on Lake Poygan and Winneconne has been hot and cold also.  Small cranks baits and crawler harnesses have both been working.  I plan on spending some time out there next weekend.  I’d bet I could find a few in the river too if I had the time.  A jig and leech fished on drops in to deep water or through any spring and clam beds should catch fish.

Bass fishing has been so – so due to the low water but there is some good fishing to be had for smallmouth and largemouth but PLEASE REMEMBER TO RELEASE THE BASS.  Too many better eating fish around to keep a bass.

Speaking of good eating fish.  Catfish are starting to bite pretty well and I’ve heard reports of some nice sized perch in the river along with the start of some bluegill fishing.  Populations for both are exploding in the Winnebago system.

The cool down and falling water temperatures have affected the overall white bass bite.  There are still fish being caught but not in as good of numbers except for those who find a group stacked up adjacent to a spawning area.  The falling water levels should also move some of the fish.  Some more rain would be good for fishing but the real peak will be once the water warms up a bit.  Watch the water level and temperature gauge inked on my web site on the outdoor page for the best predictor of the peak bite.  16.6 celcius is about 62 degrees farenheight, and a good target.  Lilacs are just starting to bloom, hmmmmmmmmmm.  And I used to think that was a bunch of bunk!

If there are any golfers out there I have some certificates for golf at Glen Cairn Golf Course, east of Iola.  They are for 2 golfers, 18 holes with cart at weekday rates and have a value of approximately $60.  They are good for the entire 2009 AND 2010 season and can be redeemed at full value for weekend play.  All you do is pay the difference in price between the weekday and weekend rate.  It’s a nice, challenging 18 hole course that I’ve always enjoyed playing.  I will sell the certificates 1 for $30, 2 for $50 and 5 for $100.  Contact me via email at joel@wolfrivercountry.com or give me a call at 920.472.4535 if interested.  I have a limited quantity available.

Generally fishing for white bass has been pretty good throughout the system.  I’ve heard reports of good catches from just about everywhere.  The cool down should extend the bite and expected rain continue to draw fish in to the system.  Water levels have been dropping and water temps had reached 62 but have now dropped back below 60.  More this week as I talk to a few of my friends in Fremont.

I’ve heard credible reports of white bass being caught from Winneconne to Shiocton.  It’s still early in the run but water levels have returned to a more normal state thanks to some well needed rain.  There have also been some good reports of walleye fishing scattered around the system too.  Catfish, perch, crappie and bluegills are also starting to bite along with some decent bass fishing.  I also expect to see some quality northern pike fishing with the opening of the season, this Saturday.
