WOW, could not believe the size and quantity of the white bass we caught over the weekend. Even seasoned walleye anglers are having a bit of trouble getting their baits past the active white bass which seem to be all over the river. Early morning, when the white bass activity is slower, is best for walleye right now. As far as the white bass, they are still pre-spawn and there are LOTS of them. I had no trouble finding a half a dozen places where I could catch all I wanted without another boat near us. We just floated down from New London and worked pockets of flooded grass that were near deep water. The best spots were off the current and had a good size shelf of 4 - 5 feet of water and some weeds. The fish would work shallow then back off to the shelf area once we caught quite a few on spinners. We would then switch to a jig and work it with a quick hop-hop action or bobber to take the less aggressive fish. Kevin and I caught and released over 100 in just 2 hours Saturday afternoon. At least a dozen were the size of the one pictured, (over 16 inches) and many were over 14 inches.

Well from what I’ve heard and seen the white bass action has been very good. Larry Martochko from Larry & Jan’s Resort called in one of the best “runs” since the 70’s. That’s a pretty strong statement from someone who really knows the white bass. I’ve heard reports of excellent fishing for white bass all over the system.

Walleye are starting to show up too now that the water level is dropping to within the banks. They are leaving the marshes above New London, (many went all the way to Shawano) and are starting to show up al over the river. I talked to anglers in Fremont on Wednesday night and most had taken a few walleyes in their basket of white bass. Those targeting walleye in the New London area are starting to see better catches drifting and jigging. It should be a GREAT weekend for fishing, so come up and visit us in Wolf River Country.

The cool down hasn’t done too much to slow down the white bass bite. Those who are finding schools of fish are having no problem catching 50+ white bass with coolers full becoming more common. The male walleye are also starting to show up in the New London area, above Fremont and below the Rat River. Lake Poygan should also start to produce some walleye very soon also. The Winneconne area has been red hot for white bass with an occasional walleye showing up. Local theory is that the walleye are around but there are too many white bass to compete with for angler offerings.

Look for the introduction of Fish & Game Gourmet Honey Sauce very soon. The Lemon/Pepper is GREAT on fish of all kinds and Hot Orange Chipotle a hit on duck, ham and even turkey. There are 6 flavors to choose from, I’ll post a link in a few days. It will also be available in numerous area bars and restaurants.

Good Luck Fishing, Please Tell Your Friends About My Site.
THANKS!!

Well the water levels are dropping, that SHOULD mean that the male walleyes that went way up stream will be coming back. Some are trickling back now, but walleye action has been spotty all over the river. Some anglers are still finding success. White bass action has slowed a bit but there are still plenty to be caught. My friends fished yesterday and had no problem filling their livewell to the top, along with a bonus walleye. THERE IS STILL A NO WAKE RULE ON THE RIVER WITHIN 500 FEET OF ANY PERMANENT STRUCTURE IN ALL OF WAUPACA COUNTY. Point is, if you want to fish the bottom of the river above Lake Poygan, use the launch at Hahn-A-Lula or Chico’s at Orihula, or if you’re coming from the south Kiesow’s Landing on the Rat River. There’s a fully stocked bait shop, a nice ramp with plenty of parking and you can run the Rat and lower end without contending with the large NO WAKE zones. Look them up on my web site, Wolf River Country.Com

Perch are biting in the Fox River near Oshkosh and I’ve heard of some crappie from the back waters.

Water temperatures are such that large groups of fish are spawning. That means the bulk of the males will be in the marsh. Some late arriving fish will still be pre-spawn but groups of post spawn females are already on their way down stream. Last night numerous rafts in the New London area caught quite a few post spawn females and a few males have been biting along wood lines and near marsh entrances. Water levels dropped a bit and temperature is up to near 48 degrees. Not sure what the rains will do, but look for fishing to get better VERY soon as the post spawn bite starts. THAT’S the real walleye run.
Still NO WAKE downstream of New London and all of Waupaca County within 500 feet of any building, dock or structure. Some white bass have been starting to show up in the Fremont area too.
Make sure to keep track of water levels for the main walleye bite. It will start when the water starts to drop quickly and the bulk of the males leave the marsh.
Good Luck!!

Water levels are well above the yearly average, which they had been hovering around. Water flow is also nearing the 80th percentile and should rise for the next few days. There are lots of fish in the system and groups fished yesterday below Boom Island were already starting to spread out. Water temps had reached 45 degrees but are now 40.5 and should continue to fall. This could be one of the best down runs ever if the bulk of the fish keep coming up river. Keep check out Wolf River Country.Com and please tell your friends about the site. More soon.

Fishing has been hit or miss for one main reason. The water temp got to the point where the walleye are getting the urge to spawn. The recent rains and snow have the river rising and a LARGE school of fish has shown up below Boom Island. From what I heard first hand, most everyone that went this morning in the rain caught LOTS of fish and limits were easy. New London has been good if you find a pocket of fish but the current has drawn the fish staged there up stream. The real small boat action is Stephensville and above. With the main body of fish coming look for just about any section of the river to be good. They will spread out as they encounter the spawning areas above Fremont and many will go well past New London. There will also be some post spawn fish showing up. Those are typical early spawners who were in the marsh when we had the sunshine and warm days. It’s only a small percentage of the fish, the best is yet to come.
